Hi, my story began in 2023. I had just rescued a beautiful Moyen Poodle and had three months of good training before a shocking phone call from my doctor around April 1st (no fooling here) telling me, “You have breast cancer.”

I had gone for my regularly scheduled mammogram, and when you have dense breasts, it requires a secondary test. That day, I had a total of 4 different looks and remembered asking, “What is going on?”

I was about to embark on the unknown, scary journey of Cancer. The BIG C. Where was my life heading now?

To my sweet surprise, I discovered that I had many Earth angels who helped carry me through the next four months. My diagnosis revealed I had triple-negative breast cancer, which is the fastest-growing and most common in reoccurrence. Within two weeks, we had made my treatment plan, and I had a double mastectomy.

I chose a double because I didn’t want to spend every 3 or 6 months fearful of going in for yet another series of tests and the whole ordeal. There are so many decisions to make that are just so very personal. I also chose not to have any reconstruction and to be a flattie.

My surgery was followed up by two months of chemotherapy, which literally took me to my knees. From the time I was diagnosed til I completed chemo, I felt so loved and cared for by dear friends and family. I know for a fact that all that love helped me stay positive, which makes the tough days go by a bit easier.

Oncology yoga is not a softer, generic yoga class. Yoga4cancer is a scientifically based practice that addresses the safety issues in our yoga postures and incorporates the idea that yoga is medicine for our healing. Lubricating our joints through movement increases the range of motion, and as such, I always told my Yoga for Golfers students that ‘motion is lotion.’

There are many benefits to oncology yoga:

  • Stimulates the immune system, which may become entirely compromised during different treatments.
  • Learning how to expand our bodies by breathing in and settling down with a slow exhale
  • Boosts the weight-bearing bones, which can also become weakened by certain treatments.
  • It may help lower blood sugar.
  • It helps to lessen fatigue and improve sleep.
  • It can assist in psychological well-being and quality of life.

I’m so grateful for Tara Prinster’s course, Yoga4Cancer. It is an incredible tool that helped me understand what my body, mind, and spirit were going through as they continued to undergo so many changes.

Zoey (my adorable Moyen poodle) and I are looking to connect with those going through or have completed their cancer journey so we can share this beautiful practice together and hopefully make your experience a bit easier.

This is a way for me to pay it forward to those who are facing the challenges of cancer.

🧘 Yoga helps me work through some very tough days, and I’m so grateful for the training I’ve received.
